Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled, experienced, and detail-oriented Investigative Paralegal /
Administrative Assistant to support a small, fast-paced, and quickly growing Private Investigation and Bail Bond Agency. This role is central to the firm’s investigative operations and provides critical support for a wide range of case types, with a primary focus on criminal defense investigations conducted for multiple Public Defender’s Offices in Michigan's Thumb region and Southeastern counties. Additional casework includes civil litigation, due diligence, asset location, and law enforcement officer pre- employment background investigations.
Primary Responsibilities:
Criminal & Civil Investigative Support
• Review and organize discovery materials received from legal clients.
• Identify and summarize relevant case details, timelines, and investigative targets.
• Prepare comprehensive background reports on witnesses, complainants, defendants, and other involved parties.
• Conduct public records research, including court filings, property, business, and licensing records.
• Draft detailed investigative summaries, memos, and findings reports.
• Assist in preparing investigative reports for attorney review and court presentation.
Due Diligence & Asset Search Investigations
• Conduct due diligence investigations on individuals and businesses, including
verification of assets, corporate affiliations, and litigation history.
• Perform asset location searches for use in civil judgments, divorce proceedings, and
collections efforts.
• Analyze financial records and supporting documentation when available.
Law Enforcement Background Investigations
• Assist in compiling full pre-employment background investigations on law
enforcement candidates.
• Verify employment history, educational background, and personal references.
• Summarize findings in a formal, well-documented narrative report.
Administrative & Case Management Support
• Maintain accurate records in internal case management systems (CMS).
• Process and analyze Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and agency responses.
• Conduct open-source and social media analysis to support investigative objectives.
• Track and report on outstanding discovery and missing documentation.
• Coordinate with attorneys and clients regarding case developments.
• Prepare professional correspondence, case summaries, and final reports.
• Assist in coordinating travel and preparing materials for conferences, presentations, and
continuing education events.
Bail Bond Office Support
• Answer calls and schedule appointments with prospective clients.
• Meet with clients in-office to complete bail bond paperwork and agreements.
• Occasionally deliver bonds to the jail or courthouse when needed.
• Enter bond and client information into CMS and maintain bond tracking records.
• Communicate with field agents across Genesee, Lapeer, Shiawassee, Saginaw, and surrounding counties.
Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor of Science in Paralegal Studies or equivalent degree required.
• Minimum of 5 years' experience in a paralegal, legal assistant, or investigative
support role.
• Demonstrated knowledge of criminal and civil legal procedures, including
discovery and case management.
• Familiarity with FOIA regulations, public records research, and open-source intelligence
gathering.
• Skilled in using CMS platforms, QuickBooks, Microsoft Office, and legal research databases.
• Proven ability to manage multiple confidential, complex case files independently and
accurately.
• High level of professionalism, discretion, and ethical standards.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
